Project Information
This particular Yamaha XS 650 had been purchased as a completed bike,
which the customer wanted to update and personalise to his requirements.
We started with a project brief suggesting different colour options
that would complement the panel shapes and airbrush themes that the
customer desired. Once the project aspects where finalised and agreed
upon, work was started.
After initial cleaning and sanding of panels we discovered that there
were several more layers of powder coat than initially anticipated
hiding up many problems. Media blasting was used to remove all traces
of previous paint and gave a good key for our primer and fillers.
House of Kolor Epoxy primer was used on the tank prior to body filler,
this gave a good visual of the tanks shape and an excellent adhesion
to the metal. All other panels and assorted parts were coated with
Etch primer once filler work had been completed, then coated with
High Build primer.
Once baked and allowed to cure thoroughly, all panels were flatted ready
for customers requested Base colour and Clearcoat to be applied. The
frame and assorted parts were collected whilst the tank and mudguards'
were flatted ready for airbrush work and more Clearcoat carried out
by my colleague Darren Horton, before polishing to a show standard.
